As a child, Joseph Hubertus Pilates (1883 – 1967) suffered from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. In adolescence, foreseeing a worsening of his clinical state and a consequent loss of mobility and quality of life, and fearful of living out the rest of his life “bound” to wheelchair as his doctors “prophesied”, he became motivated to teach himself human anatomy and physiology. From there, Joseph Pilates developed exercises on homemade equipment of his own design. Practicing these exercises on his Reformer machine, he created his own method and became obsessed with overcoming his physical limitations. Through practicing his exercises, Joseph Pilates became a gymnast and a diver while he was still quite young. Throughout his life, he developed close to five-hundred exercises that helped him and his followers to live a long and healthy life.

Pilates is currently one of the most talked about training methods in the world. From renowned athletes like Venus and Serena Williams, Andy Murray, Kobe Bryant, David Beckham and even our “own” Cristiano Ronaldo, it is famous even amongst the “famous” themselves, including Lady Gaga, Madonna, Oprah Winfrey, Hugh Grant, Sting, Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts, and many more!

It has the advantage of being one of the safest and most effective forms of training, making the body stronger from inside out. It is the perfect complement to cardiovascular training, sports training or rehabilitation. It is excellent training for all, from the athlete to the beginner student, for patients who are pregnant to those with spinal problems.

Physical therapists, seeing the good results that can be achieved by using the Pilates method and how they might apply to their practice, adapted the movements Joseph Pilates created to fit the needs of the patients they work with, modifying more difficult movements to make the exercises and the benefits they provide accessible to all. This is how the Clinical Pilates method came to be.

These are the most common questions that come to mind when deciding to begin this method of exercise.

The Pilates Method includes the traditional MAT Pilates and REFORMER Pilates, which is becoming increasingly popular. One complements the other, given that the body should work both with and without the support of the equipment, allowing for more freedom and requiring even more movement control.

The machines/equipment were developed by Joseph Pilates with the goal of adding personalized resistance to the exercises. Each person is unique. Each person has their variables and each person responds differently to the same stimulus.
The machines are stimuli, they are direct contacts with the individual, waking up their mechanical receptors and promoting the body’s adaptation to that change. Without contact and tactile stimulus, the body has more difficulty changing and adopting a new posture.

MAT Pilates should be, however, the final challenge, that is, the body’s ability to show that it can adopt the movement and the posture upon verbal command and with reduced tactile stimulus.
The challenge increases with the more freedom and less resistance we impose on the body.

The Clinical Pilates Method that we utilize at FISIOVIDA gives special importance to the individual evaluation, working on the weaknesses/dysfunctions of each body. In this sense, the individual will always have more benefits from individual than from group practice. We do not believe in classes with a large number of students (our maximum limit is 5) because our primary value is quality over quantity! Group mat pilates is a good choice after a client achieves a significant evolution in their individual performance. This way they will be prepared to handle challenges without developing possible dysfunctions or pain.

Furthermore, at FISIOVIDA, this method is a part of a unique concept that looks at the body as a whole, both internally and externally. The individual is evaluated and treated in a very detailed way in order to achieve their best performance, or in other words, their best state of holistic health.

The concept of Clinical Pilates practiced at FISIOVIDA is not only restricted to the set of exercises proposed and developed by Joseph Pilates between 1914 and 1922. Although this method of exercise is already over 100 years old, it endures as a modern method that delivers excellent results, both in posture and in motor control. Still, the body is its own world! Each individual is unique, and each body presents its own weaknesses according to internal and external variations that occur throughout each client’s lifetime.

We cannot focus on the external alone, on just the loss of strength or flexibility, on the structural changes and possible traumatic events. We must treat the client as a whole and also evaluate internal issues such as visceral alterations, resulting from changes in the gastrointestinal and enteric nervous system, and even endocrine changes. And why?!

Because the abdominal region is our core, it is where all life starts. Any alterations in this location will make it impossible to develop a strong core, or a good “powerhouse”, as Joseph Pilates called it. We need a “house” that is free of tension so that the body can be free and adequately respond to the movements that are both imposed upon and requested of it.
To achieve this, it is the responsibility of Dr. Marta Gomes, the force behind the Integrated Concept, to include in the Clinical Pilates consultation an evaluation, diagnosis and, frequently, treatment according to Chinese Traditional Medicine and Hypopressive Abdominal Gymnastics – HAG. It is also pertinent to evaluate and, if needed, correct eating habits to reap the full benefits of treatment (Functional Nutrition). In short, it is vital to work the body against resistance (Pilates REFORMER) and without it (MAT Pilates) in order to challenge the body to evolve towards a higher level of strength, flexibility and vitality that automatically translates into a significant increase in quality of life!
